If you walk around your home look for areas where roof lines intersect. Many times an intersection point offers rats, squirrels and raccoons the perfect opportunity to enter your attic. We have a lot of experience finding these entry points, sealing them, then trapping, exterminating and removing the rats (squirrels and raccoons we relocate), then decontaminate your entire attic. The decontamination process helps prevent animals from re entering your home as well as disinfect.

Rats, Rodents, & Raccoons will always try to get into your home. Its their instinct to find a safe home for nesting.

They know that they can eat through foam, we are not sure how they can distinguish the foam from a stucco wall, but they are much smarter than we think. And in many cases they can get into an attic through this decorative foam. This is just one area that is easily exploited by these relentless critters.

Once a rat gets into your house, they make it their home. They tell their relatives and friends and have a party! But seriously we rarely find one of anything in an attic. Raccoons, Rats, Squirrels and all rodents leave urine and feces in their nests in your attic which lead the way for other animals. So you not only have to remove the wildlife and seal all entry points, but you also need to decontaminate the bacteria and neutralize the odor to keep them out permanently.

There are several different animals that could take over your attic and call it home. There are a couple ways to tell what critter is living in your attic. The best way is obviously seeing them enter or leave your attic however due to the nature of wildlife that probably wont happen. They are typically cunning, smart and elusive creatures that take refuge in attics across the globe. Therefore seeing them is rare. The next best thing would be to go into the attic and examine the feces to determine what kind of animal is up there. Lastly, and probably most likely you will be listening to what time of day you hear the noises and narrowing it down from there. Let’s discuss the most common types of animals to enter attics and when you will hear them. Squirrels are diurnal so if you hear noises during the day especially early morning or dusk you more than likely have squirrels residing in your attic.  Raccoons are nocturnal and most of the noise you will hear will be at night as they exit and enter the attic in the nightly rounds for food.  They are big animals so you will hear loud stomping and scampering. Also, raccoon babies are very vocal so if you hear any chirping, squeeking or the like there are probably babies up there. Rats are also nocturnal you will here them scratching and scampering around during the night.

Parks all across the world post signs saying “don’t feed the animals”. Why you ask, because bad things will happen! The most important and destructive result is when humans feed wild animals they grow to expect it. And what happens when there isn’t any left or when they come looking for food unexpectedly? Well, we have all seen it on Nat Geo and it isn’t pretty.

The results from feeding animals outside your home usually ends up with similar but not so deadly consequences. For example, a women who feeds the duck in her pond everyday will create a following and soon many ducks will show up for their daily meal. What happens to the food left behind? How many different types of wildlife prey on ducks? Start feeding them and you will find out. Rats feast on foods left behind from bird feeders and folks “just feeding the ducks” drawing them closer to their home and eventually hosting them in the attic. Opossums, snakes and raccoons all eat rats so they won’t be far behind. Soon you have created wildlife issues for yourself and your neighbors. Our staff at Animals in the Attic has witnessed this effect countless times. It usually seems to be the next door neighbor who gets the wildlife issue due to someone in the area feeding ducks, birds or squirrels. Whenever we ask do you have a bird feeder or feed the ducks they always seem to know what neighbor is the culprit. So, take the warning signs from every park on the planet and don’t feed the animals!

Rats in the AtticAnimals communicate in many ways through bodily waste. Odors from urine in some female mammals can let their male counterparts know they are ready to breed.  In others, a scent left behind from  urine can guide it at night through the paths they have made to “home”… usually your home.

For the discussion of wildlife or rodent issues within the home or attic (as it is in most cases) we need to understand how urine and feces left behind can attract other species of wildlife. These odors, if left untreated will act as an attractant and draw other animals to your home. Raccoons for example eat rats and will be compelled to enter an attic that smells of urine for a meal. Opossums also eat rats and will follow their scent just about anywhere to get a meal.

At animals in the attic we decontaminate the effected areas of your home or business to destroy disease causing bacteria harmful to humans and pets and we deodorize the area to remove the attractant smells wildlife leaves behind. This decontamination process combined with our state of the art exclusion services (animal proofing) will provide you with the best defense against any further wildlife intrusion.
